Electro-surgical scalpels rely on large amounts of electrical current to cut, coagulate and desiccate biological tissue in order to minimize blood loss during surgery. Many equipment manufactures rely on optical isolators to prevent users from coming in contact with these large electrical currents.
The main challenge was to meet a large isolation voltage to pass FDA and UL guidelines. The customer required 32mm of creepage distance between the two closest conductors to pass the electrical isolation requirement. TT Electronics met the challenge by offering a custom version of the OPI127 with a custom housing able to meet the creepage distance.
